if you’re american and over 18 and not registered to vote or plan on sitting out the 2018 midterms please know that

  1. you’re dead to me
  2. and a recent supreme court decision makes it legal for states to purge you from voter rolls and strip your voter registration if you sit out one (1) election

if you’ve been registered to vote for a couple years and haven’t voted since the 2016 election or before, you need to check if your state purges its voter rolls. the organization where I’m interning does a lot of voter registration efforts and I didn’t know until this week that Georgia purges inactive voters from the rolls every two years, so if you haven’t voted since 2016, you might need to re-register.

also, if your address has changed or you’ve gotten a legal name change since the last time you voted, you need to update your registration.

if you live in Georgia, you can check if you’re registered (and also register to vote if you have a state-issued ID) here. if you don’t have a state-issued ID, you’ll need to print out the packet and mail it in, or you can find an event in your area where people are doing voter registration and they’ll mail it in for you.

other useful voter registration info for Georgians:

- if you’ve been convicted of a felony, you can still vote once you are off-paper. however, you are not automatically re-registered; you’ll need to complete a new voter registration.

- if you don’t have a permanent address, you can put a location where you spend a lot of time, such as a shelter, as your address. you can also list an intersection where you regularly spend time as your address.

- if you’re trans and/or gender non-conforming and worried about Georgia’s voter ID laws, here are some resources and options for voting. Here is a list of acceptable forms of ID; if your gender marker is correct on your passport, for example, but not on your driver’s license, you can vote using your passport.

For people anywhere in the US, Election Protection has resources on getting registered, election dates, voting absentee, locating your polling place, etc, and you can call them (1-866-687-9683) from your polling place if someone tries to prevent you from voting for any reason.

Si la migra aparecen en su puerta

  • no abras la puerta. Estate calmado.

Yes, but as a note:

You must DECLARE AFFIRMATIVELY that you are invoking your right to remain silent!! If you just stay silent, you haven’t actually invoked the right. It’s an annoying legal thing, but you have to speak in order to stay silent. All you have to do is say “I am exercising my right to remain silent” (and then DO remain silent after that!).

That last bit is due to a somewhat recent Supreme Court decision.

homophobes are not allowed to use computers because the inventor of the computer was gay

People think this is just a joke but Alan Turing was the inventor of the computer and his sexuality was illegal in his time (which was not even 100 years ago) and he was arrested. They put him on drugs that destroyed his genius brain and committed suicide a year after being covicted. He was gay and a war hero as well. He helped to break enigma which was a German code that they put all their messages through. He shorted WWII by two years and saved so many lives in the process.

Friendly reminder that if not for Alan Turing you wouldn’t be reading this post and we might be ruled by the nazis

But still interested in feeding yourself? What if I told you that there’s a woman with a blog who had to feed both herself and her young son…on 10 British pounds ($15/14 Euro) per week?

Let me tell you a thing.

This woman saved my life last year. Actually saved my life. I had a piggy bank full of change and that’s it. Many people in my fandom might remember that dark time as when I had to hock my writing skills in exchange for donations. I cried a lot then.

This is real talk, people: I marked down exactly what I needed to buy, totaled it, counted out that exact change, and then went to three different stores to buy what I needed so I didn’t have to dump a load of change on just one person. I was already embarrassed, but to feel people staring? Utter shame suffused me. The reasons behind that are another post all together.

AgirlcalledJack.com is run by a British woman who was on benefits for years. Things got desperate. She had to find a way to feed herself and her son using just the basics that could be found at the supermarket. But the recipes she came up with are amazing.

You have to consider the differing costs of things between countries, but if you just have three ingredients in your cupboard, this woman will tell you what to do with it. Check what you already have. Chances are you have the basics of a filling meal already.

Here’s her list of kitchen basics.

Bake your own bread. It’s easier than you think. Here’s a list of many recipes, each using some variation of just plain flour, yeast, some oil, maybe water or lemon juice. And kneading bread is therapeutic.

Make your own pasta–gluten free.

She gets it. She really does. This is the article that started it all. It’s called “Hunger Hurts”.

She has vegan recipes.

A carrot, a can of kidney beans, and some cumin will get you a really filling soupor throw in some flour for binding and you’ve got yourself a burger.

Don’t have an oven or the stove isn’t available? She covers that in her Microwave Cooking section.

She has a book, but many recipes can be found on her blog for free. She prices her recipes down to the cent, and every year she participates in a project called “Living Below the Line” where she has to live on 1 BP per day of food for five days.

Things improved for me a little, but her website is my go to. I learned how to bake bread (using my crockpot, but that was my own twist), and I have a little cart full of things that saved me back then, just in case I need them again. She gives you the tools to feed yourself, for very little money, and that’s a fabulous feeling.

Tip: Whenever you have a little extra money, buy a 10 dollar/pound/euro giftcard from your discount grocer. Stash it. That’s your super emergency money. Make sure they don’t charge by the month for lack of use, though.

I don’t care if it sounds like an advertisement–you won’t be buying anything from the site. What I DO care about is your mental, emotional, and physical health–and dammit, food’s right in the center of that.

If you don’t need this now, pass it on to someone who does. Pass it on anyway, because do you REALLY know which of the people in your life is in need? Which follower might be staring at their own piggy bank? Trust me: someone out there needs to see this.

Reblogging for all the impoverished students. Jack is the breadline queen. And if you don’t need this - donate to your nearest food bank, stat.

Reblogging for students, working folks, and everyone who’s ever had to choose between essentials at the store because you can only afford milk OR bread, not both.

The links weren’t working for me, so here’s a fresh one. Her name is Jack Monroe

My biggest tip is to find out if your grocery store has a points card. Loblaws stores, which includes No Frills (my grocery of choice) has the PC Optimum card, which you scan each time you shop. It gives you a shopping list based on things you buy regularly, and points for every dollar you spend on specific items. So instead of some point systems where you have to buy random crap, if you buy rice or juice or peanut butter a lot, it puts those on your point offers. Then you can cash the points out towards your shopping trip. Check out pcoptimum.ca to order a card, and see which stores you can use them at. Save money!

WARNING: THE INCREDIBLES 2  IS NOT EPILEPSY SAFE.

spooniestrong:

exigetspersonal:

This is not a joke. I was at a premier showing tonight, and my immediate thought was how disasterously unsafe this movie is for my photosensitive epilepic friends. @markingatlightspeed I’m tagging you with this specifically because this would be extremely dangerous for you to watch.

There are multiple scenes in this movie with full-screen, black-and-white flashing strobe effects. They all happen without warning, and last anywhere between a few seconds to more than two minutes. In a darkened movie theater, this means the likelihood of a seizure could be VERY HIGH if you are sensitive to these effects.

If you have photosensitive epilepsy or another disorder that is triggered by strobe lights, I would highly recommend you DO NOT SEE THE INCREDIBLES 2 IN THEATERS.
Wait until the movie’s released on digital/Bluray, and you can watch it in a fully-lit room, with someone with you who will be able to help if the strobe effects do trigger a seizure.

Please stay safe.

Hey as a linguistics enthusiast I just want to inform all of you that AAVE (African-American Vernacular English) isn’t just a group of “slang words” but actually has a fully developed grammar system with different features than mainstream English, and that it could and should’ve been standardized a long time ago except white people feel uncomfortable at the idea of it being given equal status as other english dialects.
